<p>Rice planthoppers are long-distance migratory insects and major rice pests. Take-off behavior initiates migration; however, research on this behavior is insufficient, limiting accurate population prediction and outbreak forecasting. In this study, the take-off behaviors of <i>Nilaparvata lugens</i> (BPH) and <i>Sogatella furcifera</i> (WBPH) were investigated in field cages on late rice in Hunan Province from 2021 to 2023. The results showed that the latest time that BPH and WBPH climbed up flag leaves was 19:20 in mid-August and was advanced to 15:00 in mid-October for both species. The initial and end moments of take-off behavior advanced progressively from August to October. The peak take-off periods were October for BPH and September for WBPH. The average pre-flight and take-off durations increased progressively for both species from August to October. The peak take-off time from August to September was within 30&#xa0;min of the onset of darkness (OSD) (i.e., when the center point of the sun dropped 7 degrees below the local horizon, approximately 30&#xa0;min after sunset) and was approximately 45–50&#xa0;min before the OSD in October. In general, the migration peak was consistently earlier for WBPH than BPH. From August to October, a progressive advancement in take-off behavior was observed, with migration cessation documented by mid-October. These findings provide a theoretical basis for understanding migration ecology and enhancing forecasting systems.</p>
