A Comprehensive Review on Broad Spectrum of Medicinal Applications of Schiff Base Metal Complexes Derived from Quinoline Scaffolds

Among the various auxiliary ligands, Schiff base ligands are considered omnipresent owing to their ease of synthesis and broad spectrum of biological applications in medicinal and industrial chemistry. Several Studies have revealed that Cu(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II) complexes have superior antimicrobial and anticancer activities. Numerous Cu(II) quinoline complexes have shown MIC values similar to those of ciprofloxacin and IC50 values comparable to those of doxorubicin. Based on the findings of the SAR analysis, the liophilicity increases due to chelation, electron-withdrawing groups enhance potency, and square-planar geometry promotes DNA binding. Overall, these complexes play a pivotal role in the field of medicinal chemistry, exhibiting a broad spectrum of biological activities, including antimalarial, anticancer, anti-TB, antibiotic, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-Alzheimer, and antioxidant properties, which render them appealing scaffolds for the fabrication of innovative drugs with various applications in medicine. This review provides a thorough overview of the diverse applications of various Schiff base transition metal complexes from 2010 to 2024.
