Solution-Focused Approach for Syrian Refugees: A Strategy Against Hopelessness and Helplessness
摘要
This study aims to examine the solution-focused levels of Syrian refugees living in Türkiye and the relationship between these levels and hopelessness, helplessness, and misfortune. Conducted as a descriptive and cross-sectional study, the research involved 274 Syrian refugee volunteers. Data collection tools included a Personal Information Form, Solution-Focused Inventory (SFI), and Helplessness, Hopelessness, and Misfortune Scale (HHMS), administered via an online survey. Descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation test were used to analyze the data. Participants’ solution-focused thinking levels were above average, but not at the desired level. A weak, negative correlation was found between SFI scores and HHMS scores (r = -0.451, p<0.001). Age, education level, and positive health perception increased solution-focused thinking, while women, illiterate individuals, and those without income had higher levels of hopelessness, helplessness, and misfortune. Those who lost a first-degree relative in the war scored higher in terms of solution-focused thinking. Solution-focused approaches emerge as a protective factor for the psychosocial well-being of participants. Supporting solution-focused approaches in mental health services may contribute to reducing hopelessness and helplessness. Furthermore, it is recommended that refugees’ solution-focused skills be developed through education and social support programs.
