Investigating sick building syndrome in urban residential buildings in Tehran: a statistical and predictive modeling approach

The indoor environment of buildings plays a crucial role in influencing the well-being of occupants. However, the impact of different building types on residents' health remains underexplored. This study investigates the relationship between building types and occupants' health and comfort, with a focus on identifying design parameters that mitigate Sick Building Syndrome (SBS). The influence of building height on health outcomes was also assessed. A comprehensive quantitative approach was adopted, collecting survey data from residents in Tehran, Iran. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS, and predictive models were developed using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). The results revealed significant correlations between building type and SBS symptoms, with 36.30% of residents in high-rise buildings reporting itchy or watery eyes. In contrast, 66.57% of participants preferred living in villa buildings, with only 19.42% favoring high-rise buildings and 11.92% opting for apartments with up to 10 units. Comfort levels were highest in villa buildings, and comfort decreased with increasing building height, particularly in terms of heating, cooling, and ventilation. ANN modeling was used to explore whether residents’ preferences for building types could be predicted from demographic and environmental variables, with high accuracy in predicting villa-type preferences. These findings underscore the importance of considering occupants' physical and mental well-being in architectural designs. Incorporating user preferences for healthy indoor environments can help architects create spaces that enhance both comfort and health, contributing to better living experiences.
