<p>Reflecting on architectural structures in any culture can reveal the truth concealed in their valuable architecture. The current study attempts to re-examine the spatial and social structures of Iranian architecture to better understand the course of thoughts and lifestyles in Iran. The current study approach is descriptive-analytical, and data was gathered from the literature and field surveys. The theory of space syntax and its associated software, “Depthmap,” were employed in this study. The space configuration technique is a collection of ideas and procedures that deal with the phenomenology of space; as a result, it is considered one of the most significant modern methodologies of space morphology. Despite the extent of using this method to identify the morphological patterns of buildings and plan the social norms of their people, until now available studies have not considered soft landscape elements (Miānsarā’s trees) and only the effects of hard landscape elements (walls and columns) have been investigated. The primary purpose of the current study is to examine and compare the structure and distinctive aspects of the space in Shiraz’s vernacular houses with the aid of soft and hard landscape elements and also with different definitions for the regularity of spaces. Despite their numerous similarities in appearance, the houses in this city have distinctive features that have influenced the spatial connections between these buildings. To accomplish this purpose, the space syntax approach was adopted, and analysis was carried out by other graphic tools that were employed to comprehend the many dimensions of Iranian houses. The documents of 30 houses from the first Pahlavi and Qajar periods were collected and supplemented with field observations in the first stage. They were examined from socio-cultural and climatic perspectives. Following that, in the second phase, justified graphs were created for each of the selected samples. In the third phase, 30 sample cases with two indicators (connectivity and step depth) were analyzed using Depthmap software, and five houses chosen from each model sample in each period were analyzed based on the types of spatial connections and hierarchies. Then the selected case studies were assessed using four indicators (connectivity, step depth, isovist, choice, and integration). Finally, after evaluating the data, the concealed dimensions contributing to the creation of the vernacular houses’ architecture in Shiraz were revealed. The findings reveal that the primary configuration of the spaces is the same in the houses of the Qajar and Pahlavi I periods, and only some indicators are somehow different such as the privacy of the entrance. Therefore, even though the external facades of these houses tend to be more extroverted, their internal spatial communication reflects a strong tendency toward introversion in both form and content. Both periods focus on the principle of hierarchy and the zoning of house spaces into public and private spaces to preserve the privacy of the family and respect for the guests. Moreover, there is an emphasis on the simultaneous presence of three types of spaces (open, closed, and semi-closed) in the spatial configuration of the houses. Also, it can be seen that multi-faceted methods of spatial and social communication have been created without the precedence of one over the other and the existence of a true hierarchy in functional space. The results of this research can be generalized to similar cases in these two periods. This research and the method presented in it can be a basis for conducting similar research in other cultural contexts as well as in other existing functions.</p>

Investigation of the spatial configuration of Shiraz vernacular houses in the first Pahlavi and Qajar periods
