Unravelling Rising Divorces in Indonesia: The Interplay of Economic Stress, ICT Use, Domestic Violence, and the Moderating Role of Education
摘要
The dissolution of a marriage occurs when the husband and wife decide to divorce. Divorce cases have shown an increasing trend in Indonesia over the past two decades. In this study, we examine the influence of economic stress, ICT use, domestic violence, and the moderating role of education on divorces in Indonesia.
MethodsFor empirical analysis, Indonesian province-level panel data from 2007 to 2022 have been used. The fixed effects model with the Driscoll & Kraay standard error (FE-DKSE), the feasible generalized least squares (FGLS) method, and panel corrected standard errors (PCSEs) are employed for analysis.
ResultsThe results reveal that economic stress, the use of ICT, and domestic violence give rise to divorce cases in Indonesia. These factors have worsened marital relationships that result in marital dissolution. Education plays a positive role in saving marital bonds and decreasing divorce cases. The moderating role of education highlights the potential protective role that moderates the adverse impact of challenging situations such as domestic violence.
ConclusionIndonesia has witnessed a rising trend in divorce cases over the last two decades. This study identified major influencing factors of divorce in Indonesia. The findings of this study will help policymakers to devise comprehensive policies to overcome the high number of divorce cases.
