Preparation, Characterization, Photoluminescence, Thermoluminescence of Zn1-1.5xLnxB2O4 (Ln = Sm3+ and Gd3+) and ESR of Zn1-1.5xGdxB2O4

Zinc metaborate (ZnB2O4) and its Ln (Ln = Sm3+ and Gd3+) doped compositions (Zn1-.1.5xLnxB2O4, (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.1)) were prepared by ethylene glycol assisted gel burning method. This method of preparation is superior in terms of time and temperature. The photoluminescence (PL), thermoluminescence (TL) results of Sm3+ and Gd3+ doped ZnB2O4 and room temperature electron spin resonance (ESR) outcomes of Gd3+ doped ZnB2O4 are presented in this paper. The prepared compositions were pigeonholed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. The XRD profiles of Ln doped ZnB2O4 suggest they are crystallized in cubic lattice with Im3m space group. The SEM pictures display irregular shaped poly crystalline particles with considerable agglomeration and Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis supports the substitution of Ln ions into host ZnB2O4 lattice. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Raman profiles gave characteristic bands belonging to planar BO3 groups. Thermoluminescence glow curves, Photoluminescence excitation (PLE) and emission spectra of Sm3+ and Gd3+activaed ZnB2O4 including lifetimes, and ESR of Gd3+ doped ZnB2O4 phosphor were investigated and presented.
