<p>A review of a family of domestic software systems SMILE designed for numerical modeling of rarefied gas flows using the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method is presented. All programs in the family are general-purpose software products used for solving both fundamental and applied problems. The latter include studies of high-altitude aerodynamics of space stations, satellites, and reentry spacecraft. The systems of the SMILE software family were created by M.S. Ivanov and his team at the Khristianovich Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, when the institute was headed by V. M. Fomin, and their development continues to this day. A historical perspective on the main approaches and concepts at the core of these software products is presented. The capabilities and specific features of each system of the SMILE family are described.</p>
