PVA/MXene and PVA-Chitosan/MXene flexible films for EMI shielding applications

This study investigates the structural, morphological and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties of PVA, chitosan and their composites with and without MXene. Characterization using X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy confirms the semi-crystalline nature of PVA, the amorphous structure of chitosan and the successful MXene incorporation. The PVA/MXene (15 wt.%) film shows moderate EMI shielding (~ 14 dB) in the microwave frequency range of 8 to 12 GHz (X-band) due to uniform dispersion and strong interfacial interactions, while PVA-Chitosan/MXene composite (~ 0.5 dB) underperforms due to disrupted conductive pathways and lower MXene content. The present work offers a foundation for optimizing eco-friendly, flexible EMI shielding materials providing insights into polymer-filler compatibility, evidence of MXene intercalation and validation of solution casting for obtaining transparent and uniform films. The novelty of this work lies in the comparative evaluation of pristine and blended biopolymer matrices, specifically revealing the impact of chitosan on MXene dispersion and the resulting EMI shielding performance.
