Ultrafine-grained magnesium alloy for high strength with formability

This study examined the tensile behavior of an AZ61 Mg alloy processed by severe plastic deformation through high-pressure torsion. Tensile testing at room temperature yielded the tensile strength (0.2% proof stress) as high as 440 MPa (420 MPa) with the total elongation of ~ 11%. After confirming that the specimen exhibited superplasticity at 473 K to the total elongation of ~ 870%, tensile testing at room temperature was also conducted on the specimen pre-deformed to 200% to reach the tensile strength (0.2% proof stress) of 320 MPa (280 MPa) with total elongation of ~ 8%. It is anticipated that the formability of the HPT-processed sample can be realized by the superplasticity and the successive room-temperature tensile strength (0.2% proof stress) remains high with good ductility even after the pre-deformation by superplasticity.
