Abstract <p>In this work, a kind of fast curing epoxy based on polymercaptan as curing agent and silica as modifier was successfully fabricated as improved anticorrosive coating for carbon steel. The main components of the fast room-temperature-curing epoxy solution used for coating were bisphenol a epoxy resin oligomer, polymercaptan (curing agent) and ethyl acetate (solvent). The modification of epoxy was done through blending various amount of silica powder (1 wt%, 3 wt%, and 5 wt%). The epoxy solution was coated on phosphatized carbon steel via dip-coating method. The curing process was done through leaving the treated samples at room temperature (ca. 25&#xa0;°C) for 12&#xa0;h. The thicknesses of fabricated thin coatings on all samples were only about 15&#xa0;µm. The chemical compositions and corrosion behaviors of various coatings were observed by FTIR and electrochemical workstation. According to the experimental results, the anticorrosive performances of coated carbon steel were improved and the anticorrosive life can be improved significantly with only the slight addition of silica. According to impedance plots, after 6&#xa0;h soaking in NaCl solution, compared with sample coating without silica modification, the impedance at 0.01&#xa0;Hz of the sample coating with only 1% silica increases by around 33.3%.</p> Graphical abstract
