Refinement of high-voltage AC dielectric properties of low-density polyethylene by the electric field assist

The AC dielectric property of insulating material is very important for high-voltage AC power equipment. In this work, the electric field assist is used to improve the AC dielectric property. The low-density polyethylene (LDPE) as a typical insulating material was prepared under different assisted electric field. The aggregation structures of LDPE samples were characterized by polarizing microscopy and X-ray diffractometer, and the time-domain response current spectra were also tested. The results demonstrate that the crystallinity and AC breakdown strength of the 0.5 kV/mm-assisted LDPE increase by 17% and 18.5% compared with those of the untreated LDPE. All samples show nonlinear conductivity and permittivity under high excitation electric field, whereas the electric-field assisted LDPE is higher in the switching electric field than the untreated one. In addition, the equivalent dielectric parameters of LDPE decreases when the assisted electric field increases from 0 to 0.5 kV/mm, and they increase when the assisted electric field is larger than 0.5 kV/mm. This work provides a foundation for the development of HVAC power cable insulation.
