Click it and Become Vulnerable: The Impact of Online Shopping on Household Financial Fragility in China
摘要
Online shopping has gained widespread popularity globally, allowing consumers to purchase products with just a click on screens of computers or smartphones. Although extensive research has examined the effects of online shopping on consumption behaviors, studies on its impact on household financial conditions remain limited. Using data from the 2017–2019 China Household Finance Survey, this paper finds a positive association between online shopping and household financial fragility. Economically, online shopping increases the odds of being financially fragile by 5.8%. After addressing the endogeneity problem and conducting several robustness checks, our findings remain consistent. The mechanism analysis identifies irrational consumption as a potential channel through which online shopping affects financial fragility. Furthermore, the heterogeneity analysis reveals that the impact of online shopping is particularly pronounced among households that shop online more frequently.
