<p>This paper delves into three key issues related to ellipsis constructions in Chinese, with a primary focus on sluicing-like constructions that involve multiple <i>wh</i>-phrases. We also consider argument ellipsis constructions to support our points. First, we present the seemingly contradictory evidence regarding the derivation of sluicing-like constructions. To address these contradictions, we carefully analyze what can be inferred from reconstruction effects and pair-list readings concerning the hidden syntactic structures in ellipsis constructions, as well as the (im)possibility of extractions from within ellipsis sites. Next, we explore the various approaches to derive pair-list readings available in sluicing-like constructions with multiple <i>wh</i>-phrases. Finally, we examine how the derivation of these ellipsis constructions is related to focusing strategies in Chinese, offering possible explanations for why movement and deletion cannot be used to derive argument ellipsis and sluicing-like constructions in the language.</p>
