“Goddamn It, We’re Gonna Love Our Kid!“: The Experiences of Parents and Caregivers Oftrans and Gender Diverse Youth from States with Gender Affirming Care Bans
摘要
Gender-affirming care includes a range ofsocial, psychological, behavioral, and medical interventions to validate and support an individual’s gender identity, reducing gender dysphoria and improving one’s psychological health and quality of life. Despite the focus of bans on such care for young people in the United States, pediatric gender-affirming care is an evidence-based and developmentally-appropriate option. Parents/caregivers of trans and gender diverse youth face difficult choices about supporting their children in states banning such care, and we wanted to better understand their experiences. Participants were recruited virtually through social media, support groups, and therapists serving this population. Twenty semi-structured interviews were conducted in summer and fall 2024 with 22 parents and caregivers of trans and gender diverse youth. Interviews were transcribed and cleaned. Each transcript was coded by two members of our team using inductive coding and a thematic analysis approach, after which codes were organized into themes using virtual tabletop coding methods. We created three overarching themes from the inductive codes. These included: (1) uncertainties about/navigation of the shifting policy and cultural contexts; (2) complexities of the various facets of their lives (subthemes at family, community, and institutional/societal levels); and (3) emotional cores of parent/caregiver experience (subthemes of anger, feeling fortunate, grief/helplessness, and love and protection for the child). Results indicate the need for further support for these parents/caregivers, whether they stayed in or left the states banning gender-affirming care, including help with insurance and healthcare access, jobs, education, affordable housing, community resources, and legal protection.
