Antioxidant activity of marine microalgae Isochrysis galbana, Chaetoceros calcitrans, and Nannochlorum sp.: Identification and quantification of phenolic compounds

Marine microalgae are receiving increasing attention in the food and nutraceutical fields due to their sustainable production. This study evaluated the antioxidant activity and phenolic profiles of three marine microalgae species, Chaetoceros calcitrans, Isochrysis galbana, and Nannochlorum sp. via total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, DPPH, ABTS, and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) quantification. These marine microalgae strains exhibited total phenolic contents ranging from 9.01 to 21.72 mg gallic acid equivalents g−1 and total flavonoid contents ranging from 7.05 to 22.99 mg quercetin equivalents g−1. The strains exhibited significant variations in antioxidant activity and phenolic content, with C. calcitrans demonstrating the highest ABTS activity and phenolic abundance. The dominant phenolic compound identified was catechin, followed by 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, gallic acid, quercetin, and ferulic acid. The validated UHPLC method demonstrated high sensitivity and precision, making it suitable for profiling low-abundance phenolic compounds. These species-specific variations in phenolic composition and antioxidant activity underscore the biochemical diversity of marine microalgae, offering potential as sustainable sources of bioactives for the food and nutraceutical industries.
