Development of a cultivation and harvest strategy for Kappaphycus alvarezii: Evaluation of growth, morphotypes, carrageenan yield, gel strength, and chemical properties using fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy

Kappaphycus alvarezii (Doty) LM Liao is a well-known source of kappa carrageenan, used as a thickening agent in food and other industries. This study aimed to analyze factors affecting the cultivation of K. alvarezii, including cultivation method, duration, morphotype, growth, and carrageenan. The present study assessed the impact of cultivation factors on K. alvarezii at three-day intervals up to 45 days. The study found that the monoline method yielded significantly higher growth rates of K. alvarezii, along with a low cost of production over other cultivation methods trialed such as bag, cage, ladder and raft. No significant difference was found between green and brown morphotypes of K. alvarezii in terms of growth, carrageenan yield, and gel strength. No difference was observed under Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopic comparison of the extracted carrageenan of the two morphotypes. Significantly higher carrageenan yield and gel strength of K. alvarezii were recorded on the 37th and 45th days of cultivation, respectively. As a novel approach, a product-specific harvest optimization indexation method was developed for K. alvarezii. Indexation suggested that the harvesting period can be tailored to specific product requirements of K. alvarezii farming. A potential to harvest K. alvarezii on the 37th day of cultivation for specific use in low gel strength-required products or other uses such as puree, fertilizers and photochemical extraction was revealed. Furthermore, this study has identified that the Jaffna area of Sri Lanka possessed conditions for viable commercial farming of K. alvarezii.
