Effects of temperature, photoperiod and sodium nitrate concentration on the extracellular lipase activity of Chlorella sorokiniana at the laboratory scale

In recent years microalgae have taken on great biotechnological importance in different industries, particularly Chlorella sorokiniana, which has potential due to its chemical composition and rapid growth; however, an area that has not been explored is its extracellular enzymatic capacity, which may be biotechnologically relevant. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of the growth factor photoperiod, temperature, and sodium nitrate (NaNO3) concentration on the growth and extracellular lipase activity of C. sorokiniana CIB 50. The results revealed that conditions of 23 °C, 8 h photoperiod, and 0.73 g NaNO3 L−1 resulted in an extracellular lipase activity of 10.489 U mL−1 at 24 h; however, for conditions of 37 °C, 16 h photoperiod, and 0.73 g NaNO3, a specific lipase activity of 0.593 U mg−1 protein was reached at 68 h, followed by growth at 37 °C, 16 h red light and 0.73 g NaNO3 L−1, with an activity of 0.487 U mg−1 protein between 8 and 24 h. The control of the evaluated factors on C. sorokiniana induced extracellular lipase activity, making it a viable model for producing these enzymes with potential for biotechnological application.
