Conservation of eucheumatoid genetic resources through the establishment of ex situ gene banks

The Philippines has established itself as a pioneer in the development of experimental farm facilities for the cultivation of Kappaphycus (formerly Eucheuma and traded as 'cottonii') in 1966. While the commercialization of eucheumatoids has significantly progressed, the cultivated strains are limited to a few haplotypes compromising genetic diversity that may have contributed to diminished crop yields, increasing prevalence of diseases, and the decline in raw dried seaweed quality due to their repeated vegetative propagation. In response to these challenges, an integrated strategy for the conservation and utilization of eucheumatoids through ex situ gene banks was established. The initiative encompasses the establishment of the Seaweed Culture Laboratory and Gene Bank (SCL&GB) alongside an Outdoor Land-based Nursery (OLBN). SCL&GB and OLBN successfully curated a diverse array of eucheumatoids, including Kappaphycus alvarezii, Kappaphycus striatus, Kappaphycus malesianus, Eucheuma denticulatum, Betaphycus gelatinus, Kappaphycopsis cottonii, and Mimica arnoldii aggregating a total of 577 cultures in the SCL&GB and 157 in the OLBN. This approach is intended to secure genetic diversity over time, enable the selection of superior crops, and foster research in core reproductive biology, ecophysiology, and phenotyping. This study highlights the critical role of ex situ gene banking in the sustainable management of eucheumatoids and emphasizes the imperative for strict adherence to established methodologies and protocols to uphold genetic integrity and viability of these species.
