<p>Many taxonomic identities pay homage to pioneers who were key to events pertaining to a named species and that is certainly the case with <i>Kappaphycus alvarezii</i> (Doty) LM Liao. Vic Alvarez and Max Doty were pioneers of adaptive phyconomy in southeast Asia long before that term was coined. It is from their rapport with seaweed farmers that the discipline has developed. As Doty said many times, “<i>Tropical seaweed farming is an outstanding example of large-scale crop production developed from simple methods refined by farmers in the sea.”</i> Alvarez and Doty led the way in teaching us how to learn from farmers’ refinements and how to apply them as adaptive phyconomy. Vic Alvarez worked until he passed away in 1995 and Max Doty was still diligently working and talking about innovative phyconomy concepts until he died in 1996, but so long as there is <i>Kappaphycus alvarezii</i> on seaweed farms, the examples of Vic and Max can provide inspiration to practitioners of adaptive phyconomy.</p> Graphic abstract <p></p>
