Dermo-cosmetic potential of fucoidans
摘要
Nowadays skin care products and the use of topical agents are widespread due to changes in lifestyles. Natural skin care products have captured consumer attention because of their natural and biodegradable sources, which alleviate consumer concerns about the harmful effects of chemical compounds. Bio-marine ingredients, such as fucoidans, have recently gained popularity among consumers due to their versatile applications. Fucoidan, a polysaccharide rich in sulfate ester group and L-fucose, is found in brown seaweeds, sea cucumbers, and sea urchins. This review explores the properties of fucoidans, that make it an appropriate choice for inclusion in various cosmetic products to increase or ameliorate their effectiveness for specific purposes. Fucoidans have demonstrated significant effects in moisturizing, UV protection, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-wrinkle, anti-aging, anti-pigmentation, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, and wound healing properties, making it a versatile compound appropriate for a range of formulations.
