Impact of implementing digital tools in the basic design studios on the students’ design process in the following years

This study aims to investigate the impact of incorporating digital tools into the design process of first-year basic design students on their subsequent design process in later academic years. In addition, it aims to develop effective strategies for efficient integration of digital tools in the Basic Design studio. This study uses a multimethod qualitative approach, including individual interviews and focus group discussions conducted with instructors, students, and an academic jury group. The objective is to comprehensively study the impact of digital tools on the design process and creativity of third-year architectural students in the NAAB-accredited program. The assessment of student’s work is based on a five-phase model of the design process and the Creative Product Analysis Matrix (CPAM). The findings show that the unguided introduction of digital tools in the Basic Design studio resulted in a decline in overall student performance, creativity, and understanding of the primary design principles. The research identifies key strategies to effectively incorporate digital tools in the basic design studio, including considerations for when, where, and how to use them. This paper is essential for educators, designers, and researchers seeking to improve the design education process.
