Purpose <p>To report on specular microscopy findings in eyes operated for primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) compared to age-matched normal children.</p> Methods <p>The study was conducted on 80(38 right,47.5%) eyes of 56(40 males,71.4%) children operated upon for PCG, 26(15 right,57.7%) fellow eyes of 26 (17 males,65.4%) children with PCG and 42 normal eyes of 42 (17 males) normal children (between January 2007 and July 2020). Complete ophthalmological assessment was followed by specular microscopy. Data were compared between the 3 groups of eyes.</p> Results <p>The mean ± standard deviation age of the study children with PCG and operated eyes, children with PCG with fellow eyes and control children was 9.1 ± 2.8,8.2 ± 2.6and8.9 ± 2.3years respectively(<i>p</i> = 0.677,<i>p</i> = 0.186,<i>p</i> = 0.205). There was a statistically significant difference between the operated eyes and the fellow eyes in the cell density(CD)(<i>p </i>&lt; 0.001), coefficient of variation(CV)(<i>p </i>= 0.002), hexagonality(Hex)(<i>p</i> &lt; 0.001), number of cells analysed(Num)(<i>p</i> &lt; 0.001), average cell size(Ave)(<i>p</i> &lt; 0.001), maximal cell size(Max)(<i>p</i> = 0.0005), and standard deviation(SD)(<i>p</i> &lt; 0.001), between the operated eyes and the normal eyes in the CD(<i>p</i> &lt; 0.001), CV(<i>p</i> &lt; 0.001), Hex(<i>p</i> &lt; 0.001), Num(<i>p</i> &lt; 0.001), pachymetry (Pach)(<i>p</i> = 0.0005), Ave(<i>p</i> &lt; 0.001), Max(<i>p</i> &lt; 0.001), minimal cell size (Min)(<i>p</i> = 0.0001) and SD(<i>p</i> &lt; 0.001), and between the fellow eyes and the normal eyes in the CD(<i>p</i> = 0.0002), Num(<i>p</i> = 0.0002) and Ave(<i>p</i> = 0.0006). There were no statistically significant differences between specular microscopy findings in eyes with and without Haab’s stria operated for PCG.</p> Conclusion <p>The corneal endothelium is significantly affected in eyes operated for PCG and to a less extent in their unoperated fellow eyes. Large corneal diameters spread the endothelial cells over a large surface bringing about a reduction of the cell density and increase in the average cell size.</p>

Purpose

There were no statistically significant differences between specular microscopy findings in eyes with and without Haab’s stria operated for PCG.

Conclusion
