Role of Academician S. P. Timoshenko in the Formation and Development of Mechanics Research in Ukraine*

The article is devoted to the life and work of the world-famous scientist and engineer, outstanding organizer of science and educator, one of the founders of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, founder, director, and organizer of the first technical institute in Ukraine, S. P. Timoshenko. The main attention is paid to his contribution to the development of research in the field of mechanics in Ukraine, the creation of the first scientific institutions of the Academy, and the organization of training of scientific and teaching staff. S. P. Timoshenko’s main scientific achievements are also described, and his contribution to the development of engineering education is highlighted.
