Influence of parental career support on the professional identity of Chinese University Freshmen: The mediating roles of career adaptability and career construction behaviours
摘要
Parental career support plays a vital role in shaping students’ professional identity, yet its mechanisms remain understudied in early university stages. Based on Career Construction Theory, this study investigated how parental support influences professional identity among 4252 Chinese first-year university students with validated scales. Results showed that parental support enhanced professional identity both directly and indirectly through three pathways: career adaptability, career construction behaviours and their sequential mediation (adaptability→behaviours→identity). Findings highlight how extrinsic support activates core adaptive processes, offering practical guidance for parents, educators and counsellors in fostering students’ career development and identity formation.
