<p>This article seeks to build upon both structural and performance-based framings by proposing a Bourdieusian field theory approach. Where the structural scholars contend that populism is a product of structural conditions inherent to economic distribution, liberal democracy, nation-states, or modernity, the performative scholars reduce the study of populist conditions to a thin ideology or discursive persuasion. This article follows up on Tuğal’s (<CitationRef CitationID="CR66">2021</CitationRef>) call to unify those approaches through three theoretical interventions Bourdieu’s field theory could add to studies of the intersection between culture and populism: (1) thin ideology to habitus, (2) economic inequality to fields of struggle, and (3) irrationality to constructions of common sense.</p>
