A 40-W Q/V-Band Gateway SSPA Based on Corporate Waveguide E-Plane Combining

This paper presents the design and characterization of a solid-state power combining amplifier (SSPA) that operates within the full uplink frequency band of the Q/V-band (46.4 ~ 51.5 GHz), in which the power stage has been implemented by corporately combining 16 GaN amplifier monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) designed by CETC-13 Institute in a WR-19 waveguide. The SSPA is featured by more than 40W saturated output power with power added efficiency (PAE) of 12%, 20W output power with associated third-order intermodulation (IMD3) and spurious rejection better than 24 dBc and 65 dBc, respectively. The amplifier design employs a modular architecture where the amplifier, bias circuit, control circuit, and heat sink are fabricated independently, providing significant system flexibility. Modular amplifiers can be premade and reserved in case any malfunctioning amplifier needs to be replaced. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this SSPA is a significant improvement over all other SSPAs operating in this band.
