<p>The Jamestown Rediscovery collection contains over 100 lapidary beads, including quartz, carnelian, agate, amber, and jet. Historically produced in regions where raw materials, craftsmen, and infrastructure intersected, lapidary beads were transported across vast trade networks. India exported stone beads to Europe and elsewhere for millennia, and lapidaries operated in European cities during the medieval and early modern periods as well. Valued by Europeans and Indigenous peoples, beads followed complex paths of exchange in the Americas as trade items, personal possessions, and heirlooms. Differences in material and craftsmanship hold clues to artifacts’ origins and Jamestown’s connections to seventeenth-century global networks.</p>
