<p>Nowadays, being digitally competent is as crucial for teachers as subject matter knowledge and effective teaching skills. In line with this, The European Framework for the Digital Competence of Educators (DigCompEdu) has been established to assess teachers’ digital competence. This study uses a DigCompEdu-based instrument in order to evaluate the digital self-perception of 27,087 in-service teachers. Results reveal that, on average, teachers perceive their digital competence to be within the range of levels A2 to B2 on the DigCompEdu scale, with only few teachers putting themselves in the highest levels of competence. In particular, there is a noteworthy concern related to lower self-perceptions in areas associated with enhancing students’ digital competence and using technology for assessment. Furthermore, results indicate significantly lower self-perceived digital competence among female teachers across all analyzed areas. This highlights the imperative to improve training and increase awareness to foster this competence and drive the digitalization of our classrooms.</p>
