An Educational Process Mining Model on Students’ Paths Data from Virtual Learning Environments

In Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs), teachers usually organize the sequence of course contents and activities according to their didactic-pedagogical strategies, expecting to guide each student in his learning path. However, usually, each student follows a specific path based on his actions. VLEs typically record student interaction with course materials through an event log. Using these records to understand the pathways followed by students may reveal details about their learning strategies and enable the analysis of potential relationships between students’ choices and their performance in assessments based on the organization of course materials by the teacher. Educational Process Mining (EPM) allows for proper exploration, such as log records and analyzing students’ behavior. This paper presents an Educational Process Mining (EPM) application model designed to simplify the identification and analysis of learning paths for educators. The method was applied using data collected from a course delivered in the Distance Education modality. The results indicated that the method provides information that may be relevant to supporting teachers in identifying necessary adjustments to ensure greater effectiveness in integrating technology, instructional materials, and pedagogical strategies in Virtual Learning Environments.
