<p>Data science education in Japan extends from elementary to high school students. However, some studies show that this has not enhanced interest or curiosity in data science. Therefore, gamification appears to be an efficient method for encouraging high school students’ interest in data science, with research indicating that video games are effective in education. Given this, we developed a battle-type game “Data Monsters” to improve junior high school and university students’ interest in data science. The effectiveness of Data Monsters was evaluated using a questionnaire, and data analysis and utilization tests were assessed before and after playing this game. A total of 20 participants, comprising junior high school to university students, who were unfamiliar with data science, joined the experiment. The results of each test demonstrated that the developed game was useful in improving students’ understanding of mathematical terms and their interest in data science. The average score of their interest increased by 1.37 points. In addition, the average score of students’ data analysis and utilization skills improved by 0.96 and 0.71 points, respectively. We believe that creating content that encompasses fields other than data analysis will enable a comprehensive learning of data science.</p>

Data Monsters: Development of Game for Learning to Data Science
