Sensory Integration in Higher Education: A Systematic Literature Review
摘要
Recent trends in higher education demonstrate the recognition of sensory integration with universities and colleges worldwide creating environments that address the sensory needs of their students. Sensory regulation plays a crucial role in learning, attention, emotional well-being and is a universal human experience. The purpose of this systematic review is to present evidence on the current state of sensory integration in higher education. By analyzing 19 empirical studies that report outcomes on various types of sensory integration, this review presents findings on the benefits of sensory-friendly spaces, multisensory pedagogy, and inclusive design in supporting learning, managing stress, and fostering well-being. While prior research has established the role of sensory regulation in emotional and cognitive functioning, our findings reveal innovative approaches in higher education with sensory integration taking multiple forms to support all learners in- and outside the classroom. Strategies range from creating inclusive sensory-friendly spaces to enriching sensory learning and living experiences. Sensory integration occurs not only in classrooms, but also in makerspaces, gardens, and parks. By incorporating sensory elements, universities can lead the way in creating inclusive spaces, curricula, and instruction to support the well-being of the entire campus community.
