Science Comics in STEM Higher Education Instruction: A Literature Review
摘要
Many disciplines utilize comics as educational resources in college courses, but this trend is less apparent in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Existing research on science comics often focuses on traditionally published comics; however, there is a growing number of examples of instructors and students self-publishing comics in the classroom. This paper reviews the theoretical educational benefits of comics as a medium, along with three unique approaches that STEM instructors can use to incorporate science comics into higher education courses. Practical approaches and assessment methods for implementing these three approaches are highlighted. While current research is limited, studies indicate that students enjoy using science comics as learning material and creating them for assignments. As researchers continue to investigate ways to improve science communication with the public, educators should consider how science comics can be utilized in college education to teach students the visual literacy and scholarly communication skills necessary for success in later careers.
