Experimental study of strengthening of concrete cylinders using woven basalt and woven jute textile reinforced composite in different wrapping configurations

Existing structures are required to be strengthened, to increase its life span considering environmental impacts, sustainability, economy, based on the strength of the material used for meeting with the strength requirements. Present study aims to find the comparative strengthening effects of material for strengthening of concrete cylinders. Jute, a sustainable, environment friendly material and basalt, a strong durable material, both are used as woven textile reinforced composite to carry out strengthening of concrete cylinders. A total of fifteen numbers of concrete cylinders were cast, out of which three were considered as control specimen, three cylinders each were strengthened using basalt composite and jute composite in full wrapping configuration, another three cylinders, each were strengthened using basalt composite and jute composite in strip wrapping technique of strengthening. After testing, woven basalt composite and woven jute composite with full wrapping resulted in 42.73% and 34.18% enhancement respectively in the axial load supporting capacity. In case of strip wrapping, woven basalt composite and woven jute composite resulted in 32.05% and 25.6% enhancement respectively. Even the axial load vs. deformation graphical variation of both basalt and jute composite wrapped concrete cylinders were much better than the controlled concrete cylinders, thus proving its effectiveness in strengthening purposes.
