The influence of red mud filler on flexural strength in vinyl ester resin Hybrid composites with abaca fiber (Musa Textilies)

The aim of this study was to conduct a comparative analysis of the flexural strength of a novel red mud filler abaca fiber composite versus a traditional abaca fiber composite. Given the interest in sustainable materials, the research explored the use of red mud, an industrial byproduct, as a reinforcing filler in fiber composites. Two groups were tested: the control group with standard abaca fiber composite and the experimental group with a 10% red mud filler added. A total of 40 samples were prepared, with 20 samples in each group, and the sample size was determined using G power analysis at 80% power. The flexural strength tests, conducted according to ASTM D790 standards, revealed that the composite with red mud filler exhibited a significantly higher flexural strength of 37.790 MPa compared to 20.784 MPa in the control group. The statistical significance of these results was confirmed with a p-value of 0.001 (p < 0.05). These findings demonstrate that incorporating red mud into abaca fiber composites significantly enhances their flexural strength, offering a sustainable and high-performance material option for various applications.
