Integrating taxonomic and functional β-diversity to identify conservation priorities in semi-enclosed bay under human impacts

Yueqing Bay, a semi-enclosed bay under intense anthropogenic pressure, is experiencing declining macrobenthic biodiversity and ecological degradation. Identifying key environmental drivers and assessing habitat conservation value are essential for biodiversity management. This study integrates macrobenthic community and environmental data collected from autumn 2023 to spring 2024 to quantify taxonomic diversity (Shannon index) and functional diversity (RaoQ), and models their relationships with environmental variables to identify primary diversity drivers. β diversity was partitioned into turnover and nestedness components to explore spatial patterns and underlying mechanisms. High-value conservation zones were then delineated using local contribution to beta diversity (LCBD). Results indicate heavy metals and sediment types significantly influenced diversity patterns. Specifically, in autumn, heavy metal Pb showed an inverted U-shaped relationship with species taxonomic diversity (Shannon index), whereas Fine.clay exhibited a U-shaped relationship with species taxonomic diversity. Cu displayed a negative linear correlation with functional diversity indices, while Fine.clay showed a positive nonlinear relationship with functional diversity. In spring, metal Hg exhibited a negative nonlinear relationship with taxonomic diversity, and Coarse.silt showed a positive nonlinear relationship with taxonomic diversity. Metals Cd and Hg, together with sediment Coarse.silt, all exhibited negative nonlinear relationships with functional diversity. In both spring and autumn, stations with unique species taxonomic composition (YQ24), stations with unique functional composition (YQ18, YQ22), as well as stations YQ02 and YQ20, which both maintained relatively high functional diversity in both seasons, should be prioritized for protection to facilitate the implementation of effective ecological management strategies.
