Local contribution of taxonomic and functional beta diversity of phytoplankton and its relationships with environmental heterogeneity in a tropical reservoir

Reservoirs exhibit high environmental heterogeneity due to the river-reservoir gradient, which is reflected in the structure of the phytoplankton. Thus, environmental heterogeneity drives beta diversity, and methods such as local contribution to beta diversity (LCBD) make it possible to identify important sites for conservation or restoration. We used phytoplankton data from a tropical reservoir and calculated the taxonomic and functional LCBD over a hydrological cycle. Cyanobacteria dominated in density throughout the reservoir. Functionally, we identified seven MBFG (Morphology-based functional groups; I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII) and 22 RFG, the main ones being (Reynolds functional groups: K, M, MP, S1, and Lo). The site that contributed most to LCBD due to its environmental differentiation was the site located in the lotic region and furthest from the dam. We observed that taxonomic and functional LCBD was associated with environmental heterogeneity. Thus, there seems to be a balance between environmental filters and dispersal in the structuring of phytoplankton communities: dispersal allows phytoplankton to spread throughout the reservoir, but environmental heterogeneity limits their persistence at different sites.
