Biochemical indices distinguish native and invasive populations of bivalve mollusc Dreissena sp.
摘要
Zebra mussel Dreissena sp. is a remarkable invader distributed from Ponto-Caspian region and expected to adapt to new challenges. The aim of this study was to elucidate whether the biomarkers of Dreissena sp. reflect the common preferences intrinsic to invasion. The unique opportunity to sample the mussels from native population in the lower portion of the river Dnipro (Kh, Kherson, Ukraine) before the start of military activity here was realized. Three invasive populations were obtained from the municipal pond at western Ukraine (Tn, Ternopil), and in the northern France (Der and Uckange (Uck) ponds) in June, 2021. The indexes of oxidative stress, biotransformation, apoptosis, and Zn and Cu levels were analyzed in the soft tissues. All invasive populations were distinguished from the native molluscs by high caspase-3 and low levels of catalase, cathepsin D, cholinesterase, total antioxidant capacity, Zn/Cu ratio, and GSH. These peculiarities can promote the fast change of generations supporting the r-strategy of invasive populations. French groups had some times higher levels of protein carbonyls, metallothioneins, and lysosomal stability compared to Ukrainian groups. According to the IBR calculation, the magnitude of response was ranked as Der > > Tn > Uck > > Kh confirming the common features of invasive populations despite some selective features in each of them.
