Relationships between meteorological–oceanographic conditions and recruitment patterns of the acorn barnacle Chthamalus malayensis on monsoon-influenced rocky shores

Although monsoons are a key driver of oceanographic variability in the Indo-Pacific region, their role in regulating the population of intertidal taxa has rarely been examined. This study quantified the relationships between monsoon-driven meteorological–oceanographic variabilities and the recruitment of the acorn barnacle Chthamalus malayensis, on the intertidal rocky shores of Thailand. We hypothesised that (1) recruitment varies between the Strait of Malacca (west coast) and the Gulf of Thailand (east coast); (2) recruitment is higher during the monsoonal period, associated with greater larval delivery to shores when onshore winds, currents, and elevated water levels prevail; (3) recruitment peaks after the maximum occurrence of the embryo. Results showed that, on the west coast, recruitment was higher when the predominant winds blew onshore and after the peak of occurrence of the embryo, suggesting a degree of self-recruitment. No significant correlation was found between recruitment and wind speed; however, a positive correlation with current speed and water elevation was found at one site. On the east coast, recruitment was sporadic, and adults with embryos occurred throughout the year without a distinct peak. This study suggests the possible links between monsoon-driven oceanographic processes and the recruitment of the barnacle; however, the relationship varies geographically.
