Global distribution and environmental preferences of the non-native American bullfrog Aquarana catesbeiana

Native to eastern North America, the American bullfrog, Aquarana catesbeiana, is an invasive species with significant ecological impacts. Despite the escalating trend in the number of records worldwide, comprehensive information regarding its environmental preferences remains limited and sparse. This study compiles over 3969 scientifically supported records of bullfrogs’ non-native range from 386 publications and compares assessments of the bullfrog’s environmental preferences (habitat selection) by summarizing diverse significant variables. The evidence confirms that the bullfrog’s invasion is a global concern, with non-native populations densely concentrated in regions where the species was introduced for aquaculture purposes, notably in Asia and South America. However, its presence remains uncertain in some countries, underscoring the need for focused monitoring efforts. Bullfrogs exhibit environmental versatility, with a preference for permanent aquatic systems like cattle ponds (1–2 m deep) and extensive aquatic vegetation coverage, surrounded by human-altered landscapes like agricultural lands. The literature reveals the lack of standardized criteria in the collection of information (e.g., type of variables), which hinders comparisons among invaded sites and precludes a deep understanding of bullfrog invasion drivers. Given the urgency of managing this species, our review synthesizes dispersed scientific literature, providing valuable insights for decision-makers and future research.
