Everything is everywhere, but everywhere is different: evidence from the phylogeography of asexual bdelloid rotifer Rotaria rotatoria species complex

Systematic research on the diversity and geographical distribution of freshwater microscopic metazoans in China is still lacking, with less known about bdelloid rotifers. This study investigated the cryptic diversity and phylogeography of the Rotaria rotatoria (Rotifera, Bdelloidea) complex across 18 locations spanning four major climate zones in China, using mitochondrial (COI) and nuclear (ITS) markers. Species delimitation analyses based on three methods identified 46 entities for COI and 18 entities for ITS, with mito-nuclear discordance in the delimitation results. The R. rotatoria species complex exhibits a phylogeographic pattern that is both localized and widespread. Thirteen entities (72% of the total) are primarily dispersed within a single climate zone for the ITS dataset, compared to 35 entities (76% of the total) for the COI dataset. Temperature emerged as a key selective driver, as evidenced by the differences in ecological responses to temperature changes among entities. Notably, entity A in the Plateau Climate Zone may represent an independent lineage, which is significantly different from other entities in terms of phylogeny, ecology, and geographic distribution. This study highlights the importance of integrative approaches to reveal how plateau dynamics and ecological specialization shape cryptic diversity in passively dispersed microscopic metazoans.
