Environmental conditions inferred from a multiproxy analysis of a macrophyte-dominated shallow lake in the Argentine Pampa plain over the last 400 years

Biotic remains preserved in sediments from La Corina shallow lake were studied to infer the main factors controlling its aquatic communities and surrounding vegetation over the past 400 years. Plant and animal macrofossils, alongside aquatic and terrestrial palynomorphs, were analysed. Three distinct periods characterised the lake’s environmental history. Between AD 1630 and AD 1781, the lake was dominated by macrophytes, under clear water conditions, with surrounding halophytic vegetation. Between AD 1781 and AD 1915, turbid conditions prevailed in the aquatic system, with signs of environmental instability. Grassland vegetation expanded, including grazing indicators. From AD 1915 to AD 2015, macrophytes remained dominant, although they exhibited changes in composition. Regional grassland vegetation dominated, accompanied by indicators of disturbance and introduced exotic trees. By integrating biological, sedimentary, climatic and historical data, precipitation emerged as a key climatic driver. Anthropogenic influences, such as the introduction of exotic species and agricultural activities, played a major role in shaping biodiversity. Internally, ecological processes including trophic shifts, competition and succession also influenced community dynamics. These results enhance the understanding of shallow lake functioning in the Pampa region, revealing long-term resilience followed by increasing ecological vulnerability to recent environmental pressures.
