Thermal and Economic Efficiency of CHP Plants

Based on data on the thermal efficiency of modern and future power equipment of combined heat and power plants (CHPPs), the fuel heat utilization factor (FHUF) for the separate generation of electricity and heat is estimated at the level of 64 – 72%. Possible fuel savings for CHPPs with T and PT turbines are 13 – 21%. The paper reveals that operation of T and PT type turbines in condensing mode and with simultaneous generation of electric power by condensing and heating modes is inexpedient. Possible limits on the cost of electrical and thermal energy are shown, which are clarified under the conditions of a specific energy system. An integral characteristic of the thermal efficiency of a CHPP is the FHUF, taking into account the generation of electricity through the heating and condensing modes. For heat supply from unregulated withdrawals of condensing power plants and combined cycle power plant, the specific conditional fuel consumption for electricity and heat supply is recommended to be applied. Standard operating and reporting indicators of CHPPs with different T and PT turbines are considered. In real operating conditions, the value of FHUF is in the range of 69.3 – 75.9%. The example of three CHPPs demonstrates that the potential of fuel equivalent saving is not less than 550 thousand tons at the total annual heat supply of 22 million Gcal. Based on the analysis of reporting documentation in Form 3-TEK the conclusion is made about the expediency of improving the thermal efficiency control system.
