Seismic Stability Assessment of the Kumtor Mine Tailings Dam (The Kyrgyz Republic)

The article is based on the analysis of laboratory tests and numerical modeling of the behavior of the Kumtor high-altitude mine embankment dam in the Kyrgyz Republic. The study assesses its seismic stability on a stratified soil foundation using modern models of soil behavior under seismic impacts, such as PM4Silt and UBCHYST. The parameters for these models were selected according to the results of laboratory tests. Additionally, the Sig3 model was used for coarse clastic soils. The parameters for this model were chosen based on the results of studies published in relevant scientific and technical literature. Moreover, careful attention is given to fulfilling the SP 14.13330.2018 requirements when assessing the seismic stability of embankment dams and dikes. The work also briefly describes the results of detailed and seismic microzoning, probabilistic characteristics of earthquakes, selection of accelerograms, and a set of laboratory tests done to determine the dynamic properties of the foundation soils.
