Determining the Added-Mass Coefficient for Sloping-Profile Dams, Taking Into Account the Direction of Approach of the Seismic Wave

A procedure of plotting the diagram of hydrodynamic water pressure on the upstream face of a dam by solving the Laplace equation subject to given boundary conditions is described. The obtained solution is compared to Westergaard’s solution for a vertical upstream face and to the building regulations for a sloping face (no more than 15°). The distribution of seismic accelerations of the upstream face is determined with and without regard to the added mass of water for a seismic wave horizontally approaching the dam site at an angle of 0° and up to 60°.
