<p>Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) - a knowledge-practice-belief complex based on people’s longstanding and intimate relationship with the land - plays a vital role in community-based resource management, including farming. TEK scholarship argues that these knowledge systems are inextricably linked to a specific place and cultural context but also have the capacity to adapt in response to changing conditions. In light of this, are there elements of TEK that can “travel” to function in new places and settings, and, if so, under what conditions? This study responds to that central question, focusing on the experience of smallholder farmers in Ghana who have migrated from territories in the north to farm further south. Drawing on ethnographic data and guided by Houde’s (2007) ‘Faces of TEK’ framework, the study identifies constituents of migrant farmer-held TEK that are reproduced in receiving centres, namely: knowledge related to management strategies (Face 2), past and present resource use (Face 3), and cultural identity (Face 5). In contrast, TEK related to observation and resource classification (Face 1), ethics and values (Face 4), and cosmology (Face 6) is less able to find purchase. The transferability of TEK constituents reflects compatibility in local and migrant farming practices, supportive ecological conditions, land availability, and/or the intent of migrants to project a cultural identity. Non-transferability reflected mismatches in ecology of place, customary restrictions, or the ease by which migrant-held practices could be replaced by local ones. We discuss these findings to show how land, social capital, translocal ties, and ethnicity further condition transferability pathways. The study advances scholarly understandings of the place-based, adaptive character of TEK, particularly in strengthening claims that TEK systems are fundamentally adaptive and collaborative, with certain constituents not exclusively rooted in place of origin.</p>
