Coal Mining-Induced Land Transformations, Landslide Susceptibility, and Tribal Displacement in the Lekhapani Range of Dehing Patkai Rainforest, India

This study examines the effects of coal mining on land alterations, landslide susceptibility, and tribal displacement in the ecologically sensitive Lekhapani Range of the Dehing Patkai Rainforest, India. Land use and land cover dynamics were analyzed using high-resolution satellite imagery (LISS 4 with a spatial resolution of 5.8 m) from 2012 to 2022. The analysis indicated substantial forest degradation, as dense forest had decreased by 1289 ha (14.20%). At the same time, sparse vegetation and built-up areas increased by 1780 ha (38.26%) and 244 ha (23.43%), respectively, indicating growing anthropogenic pressure. Similarly, landslide susceptibility mapping indicated that 245.43 ha (1.53%) of the area is in high susceptibility zones, including China Basti, Jharna Basti, Ledo Coalpara Gaon, Rangringkan, Malu Pahar Gaon, and Malugaon No.2 in the Lekhapani Range. Six months of fieldwork and interviews show that mining-induced landslides cause deep, long-term harm to Indigenous groups like the Tangsa, Singpho, Sema Naga, and Tai-Phake, worsened by ongoing disruptions. Housing instability has led to repeated displacements, loss of cultural heritage, and growing socio-economic inequalities harming tribal livelihoods. Illegal rat-hole mining and coal dumping destabilize slopes, trigger landslides, and threaten nearby communities and ecosystems. Despite legal protections, the Lekhapani Range faces severe threats associated with ongoing mining, environmental damage, and weak governance in the Dehing Patkai region. The research calls for integrated geospatial analysis, stronger regulations, and sustainable rehabilitation to address the environmental and socio-cultural impacts of land use change in this region.
