<p>Based on local knowledge of soil management, as well as physical and chemical soil indicators, we present participatory research on soil ethnoconservation conducted in a quilombola community within the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Four land use systems linked to traditional management practices were evaluated. Our results demonstrate how soil quality indicators, agricultural land suitability, and local knowledge are interconnected and can be conceptualized as Soils’ Contributions to People (SCP), aligning with the Nature’s Contributions to People (NCP) framework proposed by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). Although low natural fertility presents challenges for agriculture across all areas traditionally managed by quilombolas, the main SCPs identified reveal that traditional management practices enhance agricultural suitability and provide multiple benefits for both local communities and Atlantic Forest conservation. These benefits include producing healthy food, regulating the local climate, controlling erosion and floods, supporting territorial identity, and sustaining livelihoods. From an ethnopedological perspective, five soil classes were identified primarily based on visual indicators. Engaging local communities in soil management planning is a crucial strategy for advancing soil conservation. We argue that quilombola soil management practices—often overlooked due to racism and social marginalization—possess significant potential to address critical socio-environmental challenges faced by traditional communities.</p>
