Riverine People’s Knowledge of Climate Change in the Negro River, Brazilian Amazon

We investigate local ecological knowledge (LEK) about climate change among riverine communities along the Negro River in the Brazilian Amazon. We conducted 84 interviews across nine communities spanning 150 km of the river. Among the respondents, 70% reported observing climate changes over the past decade. The most frequently mentioned changes included rising temperatures, more severe flooding, and stronger storms. However, 68% and 70% of interviewees did not notice changes in the last five and two years, respectively. The most reported changes in the past five years were increased temperatures and shifts in the rainy season. In the last two years, the main changes reported were more intense flooding and higher temperatures. Regarding agriculture and extractivism, 51% of respondents noted changes in harvest timing and quality of 26 foods due to climate change. Additionally, 48% reported a decline in fish abundance, especially of jaraqui (Semaprochilodus spp.) and matrinxã (Brycon spp.). LEK offers vital insights into the impacts of climate change. It should be integrated into public policies for adaptation, as well as measures to safeguard the health and food security of riverine communities.
