Ecofloristic Characterization and Conservation Challenges of Medicinal Plant Resources and Knowledge in Mbanza-Ngungu, Kongo-Central Province (DR Congo)

We aim to evaluate the composition, distribution, and availability of key medicinal plants in their natural habitats, assess their conservation status, and explore species interactions that are vital for biodiversity, along with the necessary conservation actions. Between June 2019 and August 2019, and from November 2020 to February 2021, we surveyed 117 ecofloristic plots, identifying 709 plant species across 113 families and 445 genera. Of these, 35% were medicinal, many of which are increasingly rare and found at low frequencies in natural harvesting areas. The vegetation surveyed reflected a heavily degraded intertropical secondary forest, emphasizing the urgent need for conservation. To combat the decline of medicinal plant resources, both in situ and ex situ conservation measures are crucial to support communities that rely on these plants. This strategy is vital for preserving both biodiversity and Kongo traditional medicine practices.
